Nanotubular surface modification of metallic implants via electrochemical anodization technique

چکیده
Due to increased awareness and interest in the biomedical implant field as a result of an aging population, research in the field of implantable devices has grown rapidly in the last few decades. Among the biomedical implants, metallic implant materials have been widely used to replace disordered bony tissues in orthopedic and orthodontic surgeries. The clinical success of implants is closely related to their early osseointegration (ie, the direct structural and functional connection between living bone and the surface of a load-bearing artificial implant), which relies heavily on the surface condition of the implant. Electrochemical techniques for modifying biomedical implants are relatively simple, cost-effective, and appropriate for implants with complex shapes. Recently, metal oxide nanotubular arrays via electrochemical anodization have become an attractive technique to build up on metallic implants to enhance the biocompatibility and bioactivity. This article will thoroughly review the relevance of electrochemical anodization techniques for the modification of metallic implant surfaces in nanoscale, and cover the electrochemical anodization techniques used in the development of the types of nanotubular/nanoporous modification achievable via electrochemical approaches, which hold tremendous potential for bio-implant applications. In vitro and in vivo studies using metallic oxide nanotubes are also presented, revealing the potential of nanotubes in biomedical applications. Finally, an outlook of future growth of research in metallic oxide nanotubular arrays is provided. This article will therefore provide researchers with an in-depth understanding of electrochemical anodization modification and provide guidance regarding the design and tuning of new materials to achieve a desired performance and reliable biocompatibility.

In vivo osseointegration of Ti implants with a strontium-containing nanotubular coating
Novel biomedical titanium (Ti) implants with high osteogenic ability for fast and good osseointegration under normal as well as osteoporotic conditions are urgently needed. Expanding on our previous in vitro results, we hypothesized that nanotubular, strontium-loaded (NT-Sr) structures on Ti implants would have favorable osteogenic effects and evaluated the in vivo osseointegration of these imp...
متن کاملTitanium dioxide nanotube arrays: A novel approach into periodontal tissue regeneration on the surface of titanium implants
Titanium alloys have been extensively used as promising implant materials. The anodic oxide layer on the surface of this alloy can be a compact, porous or a tubular structure, which has a direct impact on the final characteristics of the implants. In this study, nano topographic oxide arrays were synthesized on the surface of titanium substrates using an anodic oxidation technique. The anodizat...
متن کاملTechnological capabilities of surface layers formation on implant made of Ti-6Al-4V ELI alloy.
PURPOSE The aim of the presented research was to find a combination of surface modification methods of implants made of the Ti-6Al-4V ELI alloy, that lead to formation of effective barrier for metallic ions that may infiltrate into solution. METHODS To this end, the following tests were carried out: roughness measurement, the voltamperometric tests (potentiodynamic and potentiostatic), and th...
متن کاملFabrication of Drug Eluting Ti Implants for Dental/orthopedic Applications
Titanium and its alloys are typically used for fabrication of dental and orthopedic implants as they posses various desirable properties including biocompatibility and corrosion resistance. In spite of such benefits, titanium implants show lack of osseointegration after surgery in minor cases. The objective of this research has been to modify the surface of titanium alloy for medical applicatio...
